The Sentence Skeleton · Lesson 3 of 6
이/가 & 을/를 — Role Markers
Korean marks who acts and what's acted on with tiny tags — so word order can relax.
English shows a word's job by where it sits — swap “the dog bit the man” around and someone else gets bitten. Korean pins the job onto the word itself with two more tag pairs. Learn them and sentences snap into focus.
이/가 — the subject spotlight
이/가 points at who or what does the action, often with a feeling of new or specific information — “it's this one that…”
A friend is coming. — who's coming? A friend.
Same sound rule as always: consonant → 이, vowel → 가. 물이 있어요, 친구가 와요.
을/를 — the object tag
을/를 marks the thing the action happens to:
I eat gimbap. — 김밥 wears the object tag 을.
Consonant → 을, vowel → 를: 밥을, 커피를. Three particle pairs, one sound rule — the system keeps repaying you.
은/는 vs 이/가 — the honest answer
Why this buys you freedom
Because the tags carry the roles, Korean word order can flex for emphasis without losing meaning — the verb just keeps the last word. That's the deeper story of the particles article, this lesson's reading companion.

What you just learned
- 이/가 spotlights the subject; 을/를 tags the object.
- Consonant → 이/을, vowel → 가/를 — same sound rule as 은/는.
- 은/는 frames, 이/가 spotlights — and mixing them up is normal.
- Role tags are why Korean word order can relax.
